It’s not just suspicious zombie blogs that are out to drum up paranoia and eagerly await any kind of apocalypse. You can count on your trusty old, non sensational, non biased news sources like CNN to help! The latest virus that will kill us all is called Novel Coronavirus and it’s hiding, somewhere in nature, killing us, and waiting for you!

So far, it seems, the virus is geographically limited to the Middle East.

The virus had infected 44 people worldwide as of last week, according to the World Health Organization’s most recent update last Thursday. Half of them have died. Also the update, the WHO appeared to have given the novel coronavirus a name: Middle East respiratory symptom coronavirus, or MERS-CoV.

On a molecular level, the coronavirus more closely resembles the SARS virus which sickened 8,000 people and killed 774 between 2002 and 2003, than a cold virus. However, victims of MERS-CoV also had kidney failure, which wasn’t seen in SARS patients.

So SARS killed only 8000 people, hardly an epidemic. Will this new virus be our pandemic on a Hollywood level? Will those infected shamble about transmitting the virus through saliva? Well, we just don’t know yet!
