Zombie Theatre: Multi-Purpose Doom

Jul
24

Zombie BallerinaThe old community center is always a good place for family-friendly wholesome gatherings. Shoot some hoops, learn to dance, and make new friends. But is it adequate for when the zombies take over? Wait, what? Yes, there you are rollerskating around the big room with Abba on your Walkman, when legions of the Bridge Club’s little old ladies and do-good sporty kids come storming in looking for hungry, youthful brains. Where’s your trusty sidearm?

Update 08/04/08: SEE THIS PLAY

It’s not so much a play as it is a first-hand observational experience in survival, horror, comedy and defense. It’s well produced and well acted, and follows the characterization and drama of Romero’s signature movies. The play is suggested donation $15 and it’s absolutely worth it. You also get a zombie survival merit badge to add to your collection!

Fridays and Saturdays July 18th -> August 23, doors 8:30, play 9:00
Menomonee Club 1535 N Dayton, Chicago $15

Zombies Attack Downtown Chicago

Jun
23

chicagoJune is off to a hot start in Chicago. Approximately 500 zombies (there was no official count) found their way to Millenium Park, and proceeded to generally wreak havoc all over downtown Chicago and Grant Park. Stacked in the ranks of shambling horrors were doctors and nurses, goths, punks, skateboarders, demons and a few Millenium Park police. However, there’s no need to worry that the zombies will be attacking your town any time soon, this was the Chicago Zombie March 2008 by Zombie Army Productions.

The Zombie March was the largest in Chicago yet, surpassing the pub crawl back in April. Participants gathered on the lawn at Millenium Park about 2pm. After liberally applying fake blood and makeup, the zombies put on quite a show of groaning, screaming and generally confusing passersby. Security was quite accepting of the hordes, considering they had little or no advanced notice at all. Haunted house rules were in effect – you can’t touch any of the civilians and don’t harm or break anything. For such a large, unruly mob, it was quite well behaved, with zeds generally attacking and eating each other.

Why Zombies?

Jun
18

dixiemall_019.jpgThe odds for a zombie apocalypse actually happening may be only slightly higher than the odds for the Cubs winning the world series, but that doesn’t prevent people from stockpiling food, guns and beer.

Don’t forget about tomorrow’s Zombie Walk in Millenium Park, Chicago!

If there’s one question that refuses to die from friends, readers and the government, it’s “Why Zombies?”. Zombie lore abounds in the Weltgeist, popular culture and even music videos. There’s a new zombie movie every month from Zombie Strippers to Diary of the Dead. Max Brooks’ World War Z and his Zombie Survival guide are national best sellers. Zombie video games are finally reaching the PC audience, such as Left 4 Dead and the web-based RPG, Urban Dead. Zombie walks are also popular, such as the pub crawl this April in Chicago, and the thousand person plus zombie walk this Saturday in Millenium Park, Chicago.

Looting, shooting heads, surviving in urban ruins, packing machine guns — a scavenger hunt to survive. Zombie fans agree — living in a zombie apocalypse sounds like brainless fun!

Hollywood Teaches Zombie Preparedness

Jun
07

Zombies!Several people have commented about the validity of some Undead Report articles and the factual basis for zombies in general.  They wonder if everything on here is for real; ‘Are there real zombies?’, ‘Are you serious?’, ‘Do you really believe in zombies?’. The answer they seek to these questions is unfortunately blurred by what Hollywood, Max Brooks, and George Romero would have you believe. Even with these biases, my answer is yes. Here’s why.

Romero’s biting social commentary is perhaps only slightly more accurate than his portrayal of walking corpses. The important thing to understand about his and other zombie movies is the feeling of alienation, survival and horror of one against thousands. You may already have hunting skills, HAZMAT gear, and a dozen zombie DVDs, which is an excellent way to prepare for the Zombie Holocaust. Any survival traits, carpentry skills and improvisational cooking abilities you have often extend into the realm of practicality. When it hits the fan, you’ll be a useful partner, but I could really use someone to marinate a steak for me.

Zombies Descend on Chicago – The Aftermath

May
02

On April 26, 2008 Chicago had a terror scare of the undead. Approximately one hundred zombies were seen lurching and limping around Andersonville in Chicago’s north side. Mixed in the cacophony of shouts and groans were cheerleaders, nurses, doctors, sports players, the fresh undead, alien chestbursters and more.

An event produced by improv group pH productions, Chicago’s first zombie walk was a drunken growling pub crawl full of the worst people –  and I’m not talking about Cubs fans. The event in Andersonville kicked off around 4:30 PM, with particpants meeting and signing up, applying rouge, blood and makeup, and getting their complimentary t-shirts and tickets. There were at least a good hundred or so people at the start, who proceeded to the first bar in small groups. In total there were about 300 members of the undead shambling about. To see the photos, view the zombie photo section!
